Kamuzu Day was set aside to celebrate the life and achievements of the founding father of Malawi, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, who ruled Malawi from 1964 to 1993.

He left a contested legacy that has divided Malawians into two groups: those who feel he achieved a lot and needs to be remembered and another that thinks the atrocities his government committed during his 31 years in power, calls for a Remembrance Day for the victims of his rule.

Chakwera said he is geared to continue with the vision of Kamuzu Banda and asked the youths to consider voting for him, saying although they were not around during the Kamuzu time, their vote can help support efforts aimed at going further with the development foundations laid by the founding president.

“For this dream to come true, you do not need to surrender this country to those who destroyed it. Allow me to continue building” he said.

Chakwera faces his first election as an incumbent president and has been on the road to woe voters for a second and last term.

His rivals are the former President Professor Arthur Mutharika and Dalitso Kabambe who took over the headship of UTM, a party founded by the late Vice president Saulos Klaus Chilima.

None of these three are expected to go into the elections without an alliance in a quest to achieve a 50+1% vote.
